From Rochester!

Hello everyone! For those who don't know yet, I am in Rochester Mn for a research position (post-doc) at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine; I will be working on operations research problems in healthcare. I am staying, for now, in one of the best hotels in town. Just across the hotel entrance is the Gonda building of the Mayo Clinic, a remarkable 30-story building with a wavy glass façade. The weather is great but already there is a nip in the air, a hint of things to come. The Mayo Clinic campus is spread over most of downtown Rochester; it is a bustling place, full of people, patients and researchers from all over the world (nearly 20% of Mayo’s patients are from abroad). There are temperature controlled skyways or walkways that connect all the downtown buildings with shopping conveniences, coffee shops and food courts. These walkways form a maze of sorts - which make them difficult to navigate - and have a life and rhythm of their own.

My appointment is at the Department of Health Sciences Research. I was at the department today, and the faculty members seemed quite friendly. Some were missing. I was told they were “working from home” – my eyes lit up instantly in anticipation :)

I have been given an office of my own. It’s a long room, with a white board, but, just like the MASM lab, with no windows :( I also learnt today that there is a dress code: formal shirt and pants, blazer, and a tie. I am actually excited about this; I guess I’ve always harbored secret dreams of being well dressed at work though the drabness of my daily wear at ASU might have suggested otherwise. :) More later,

  • Nice to hear from you. So...have you got lost in the maze yet? Now you probably have to choose between going to work and be well dressed or work from home :)

  • At the moment, I am avoiding the maze; I prefer the streets :) And I guess the "working from home" thing probably doesn't apply to new recruits, so I'll choose being well-dressed for a while! Which reminds me: I have to find today a reasonable store to buy good formal wear! :)

  • Hari! Glad to hear you made it safe and sound to Rochester and that things seem to be going well so far. Did you manage to find the clothes you need? I am a little surprised that you need to wear a tie and blazer every day, but I'm glad that you're excited about it! We're already missing you here in the labs and talk about you (and your noted absence) regularly. Today I brought in chocolate chip cookies, and as we walked into the lab, Baris and I were wondering who would eat them now that both you and Pam are gone! :) Anyway, we'll look forward to hearing how the work goes during your first weeks. Any word yet on whether you'll be attending INFORMS?

  • Since I and Hari aren't there, so I assume there are still some chocolate chip cookies left, right? Cuz "Cookie Monster Pam" is coming to school today to eat them!!!

  • Chocalate chip cookies! Will definitely miss them! :) I did find the clothes I needed, but I am also shuffling around what I have, creating different combinations :) A week ago it seemed that the INFORMS trip might not happen, but now I think I should be there for the all 4 days (Nov 5-8)of the conference. But I need to do lots to work to get the research and presentation done by then!

Rochester is nice and I am enjoying myself but I miss a lot of things about Phoenix - friends, student life, the casual laidback atmosphere, the food and lots more!
